It boasts over 1,000 plant species, with 15% endemic, and is home to 128 bird species (17 endemic), 31 mammal, 20 amphibian, and 53 reptile species, including the unique leaf-nosed lizard. The range's cloud forests at higher elevations represent a vital conservation area and attract nature enthusiasts and researchers. Named for its peaks resembling clenched knuckles, this eco-tourism hotspot features diverse climatic zones, encompassing only 0.03% of Sri Lanka's area while hosting a large share of its biodiversity. As a national heritage site, the Knuckles Range is crucial for preserving Sri Lanka's natural heritage for future generations.

Sera Ella

Sera Ella Falls, located in the peaceful village of Pothatawela near Laggala in the Matale District, is a breathtaking waterfall formed by the confluence of the Kitul Canal and Hunumadala River. Together, they create the Puwakpitiya River, which cascades over a rock face, dividing into two sections, each falling 10 meters. The waterfall is visible from the Dumbara Jungle and flows year-round, with the most impressive display during the monsoon season from November to March. A notable feature is the cave behind the waterfall, accessible by steps even when the fall is at its fullest. The name "Sera Ella" is linked to local lore, with various theories about its origin. Some say the name “Sera” comes from the Sera fish that thrived in these waters, while others believe it resembles the lemongrass leaves—also known locally as the Sera tree. Another charming legend suggests the name mirrors how Sera seeds scatter when dropped gently from the edge of a hand, resembling the delicate cascade of the waterfall itself.. Regardless of its name, the waterfall offers a serene retreat, with a short hike through the forest leading to a refreshing pool at its base.
